<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can reteach the same math skill three different ways, give extra practice, pull a small group, and still have students stare at the problem like they have never seen it before.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Frustrating?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Absolutely.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it may not mean your lesson failed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It may mean the missing piece is <strong>number sense</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students do not understand numbers, relationships, and reasonableness, every new math skill feels harder than it needs to be. They may memorize steps for a little while, but as soon as the numbers change, the problem looks different, or they have to explain their thinking, everything starts to fall apart.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that is exactly why number sense matters so much during math intervention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Math intervention should not just be about getting students through more problems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It should help students build the foundation they need so the math actually makes sense.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s talk about why number sense may be the missing piece in your math intervention block and what you can do to support it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Is Number Sense?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Number sense</strong> is a student’s ability to understand numbers and how they work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is more than counting.<br>It is more than memorizing facts.<br>It is more than following steps.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Number sense helps students understand:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Numbers and quantities</strong></li>



<li><strong>Relationships between numbers</strong></li>



<li><strong>Magnitude</strong></li>



<li><strong>Estimation</strong></li>



<li><strong>Reasonable answers</strong></li>



<li><strong>Patterns</strong></li>



<li><strong>How operations work</strong></li>



<li><strong>How to apply number knowledge to new problems</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A student with strong number sense can look at a problem and think, “That answer does not make sense,” or “I know 49 is close to 50, so I can use that to help me.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A student with weak number sense may only see numbers and symbols on a page.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They may not understand what the numbers represent, how they relate, or whether their answer is even reasonable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is where math intervention gets tricky.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because if we only reteach the procedure, but never rebuild the number understanding underneath it, students may continue to struggle with the next skill, and the next one, and the next one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Number Sense Matters During Math Intervention</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students who lack number sense often rely on memorized steps.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And sometimes, those steps work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until they don’t.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They may be able to solve a problem when it looks exactly like the example. But when the numbers change or the problem is worded differently, they freeze.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might notice this when students:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Follow a procedure but cannot explain why it works</li>



<li>Get an answer that makes no sense and do not notice</li>



<li>Struggle to estimate before solving</li>



<li>Mix up operations in word problems</li>



<li>Count everything one by one</li>



<li>Memorize steps but forget them quickly</li>



<li>Need constant prompting to start a problem</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why number sense is such a big part of math intervention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Without number sense, students are not just missing a strategy. They are missing the foundation that helps the strategy make sense.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Number sense supports:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Problem solving</strong></li>



<li><strong>Math reasoning</strong></li>



<li><strong>Mental math</strong></li>



<li><strong>Fact fluency</strong></li>



<li><strong>Place value understanding</strong></li>



<li><strong>Fraction understanding</strong></li>



<li><strong>Operation sense</strong></li>



<li><strong>Mathematical confidence</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students build number sense, they become more flexible thinkers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They can choose strategies instead of waiting for someone to tell them which steps to follow. They can explain their thinking. They can recognize when an answer is unreasonable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And for students who need intervention, that kind of understanding is huge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Signs a Student May Need Number Sense Support</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes students do not need more practice with the same type of problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They need support with the thinking behind the problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some signs that a student may need number sense support:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Counts everything one by one</strong></li>



<li><strong>Struggles with mental math</strong></li>



<li><strong>Gives unreasonable answers without noticing</strong></li>



<li><strong>Has trouble estimating</strong></li>



<li><strong>Relies only on memorized procedures</strong></li>



<li><strong>Cannot explain why an answer makes sense</strong></li>



<li><strong>Struggles when numbers are presented in a different way</strong></li>



<li><strong>Freezes during word problems</strong></li>



<li><strong>Has difficulty comparing numbers</strong></li>



<li><strong>Does not understand place value</strong></li>



<li><strong>Uses the same strategy for every problem, even when it does not fit</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are seeing these patterns, the answer may not be to give students more problems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The answer may be to slow down and build the number sense skills they are missing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And I know that can feel hard when you have pacing guides, assessments, and a long list of standards to teach.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here is the truth:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Students cannot build on a foundation that is not solid.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If number sense is weak, other math skills will feel harder than they should.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Number Sense and Progress Monitoring Work Together</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Building number sense is important, but we also need to know if students are making progress.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is where <strong>progress monitoring</strong> comes in.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Progress monitoring does not have to be complicated. It simply helps you answer:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Is this student improving?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Is this strategy working?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Does this student need more support?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Should I reteach this skill another way?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Is this student ready to move forward?</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This matters because number sense gaps may not be fixed in one lesson.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A student who has struggled with place value for years may need repeated exposure, visual models, math conversations, and targeted practice before the concept finally clicks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that is okay.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal is not to rush students through intervention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal is to help them grow.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you use progress monitoring, you are not guessing. You are looking at student work, noticing patterns, and making instructional decisions based on what students actually need.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is what makes intervention more purposeful.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5 Ways to Build Number Sense During Intervention</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news is that building number sense does not have to be fancy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not need to completely change your math block.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You just need to be intentional about helping students understand the math behind the steps.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are five ways to build number sense during math intervention.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Start With Visual Models</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visual models help students see the math.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is especially important for students who have been relying only on memorized steps.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use tools like:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Ten frames</strong></li>



<li><strong>Number lines</strong></li>



<li><strong>Base-ten blocks</strong></li>



<li><strong>Place value charts</strong></li>



<li><strong>Arrays</strong></li>



<li><strong>Fraction strips</strong></li>



<li><strong>Area models</strong></li>



<li><strong>Quick sketches</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, if a student is struggling with place value, do not jump straight into a worksheet full of numbers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start with base-ten blocks. Build the number. Break it apart. Talk about the value of each digit. Show it in expanded form. Compare it to another number.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students need to see that numbers have meaning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students can visualize the math, they are more likely to understand the process.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The goal is to move students from concrete understanding to visual understanding to abstract thinking.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That progression matters.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Ask Students to Estimate First</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before students solve, ask them to estimate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one small habit can tell you a lot.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>“About what should the answer be?”</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This helps students think about reasonableness before they start calculating.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, if a student is solving 398 + 207, they should know the answer will be around 600.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If they get 1,405, they should pause and think, “That does not make sense.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But students will not automatically do this if we never ask them to.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Estimation helps students build:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Reasonableness</strong></li>



<li><strong>Magnitude</strong></li>



<li><strong>Mental math</strong></li>



<li><strong>Flexible thinking</strong></li>



<li><strong>Confidence with numbers</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it is quick.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can add estimation to small groups, warm-ups, problem solving, or intervention lessons without needing a completely separate activity.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Use Number Talks</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Number talks are a powerful way to build number sense because they focus on student thinking.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of only looking for the answer, number talks ask students to explain how they solved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That matters because students need to hear that there is often more than one way to think about a problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One student may make a ten.<br>Another may use doubles.<br>Another may break apart numbers.<br>Another may use place value.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students hear different strategies, they start to build their own toolbox.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During intervention, number talks can help students:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Explain their thinking</strong></li>



<li><strong>Compare strategies</strong></li>



<li><strong>Listen to classmates</strong></li>



<li><strong>Build mental math skills</strong></li>



<li><strong>See numbers more flexibly</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not need a long number talk every day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even a few minutes can make a difference.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try asking:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>How did you solve it?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Did anyone solve it a different way?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Which strategy felt easiest?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Why does that strategy work?</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more students talk about numbers, the more confident they become using them.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Connect New Skills to Familiar Numbers</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students struggle, we sometimes jump straight into reteaching the new skill.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But students often need us to connect the new skill to something they already know.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If students are struggling with multiplication, connect it to <strong>skip counting, arrays, and repeated addition</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If students are struggling with fractions, connect it to <strong>equal parts, halves, and benchmark fractions</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If students are struggling with decimals, connect it to <strong>place value and money</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If students are struggling with multi-digit addition, connect it to <strong>tens, hundreds, and expanded form</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students need bridges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They need to see that math skills are connected, not random.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you connect new learning to familiar numbers or familiar models, students are less likely to shut down.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They can think, “Oh, I know something about this.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That little bit of confidence matters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Ask Better Questions</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Questions are one of the most powerful intervention tools you have.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not complicated questions. Not trick questions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just better questions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of only asking, <strong>“What is the answer?”</strong> ask:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>How do you know?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Does that answer make sense?</strong></li>



<li><strong>What strategy did you use?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Can you show it another way?</strong></li>



<li><strong>What do you notice?</strong></li>



<li><strong>Where did you get stuck?</strong></li>



<li><strong>What could you try first?</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These questions help you figure out what students understand.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes a student gets the right answer but has no idea why.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes a student gets the wrong answer, but their thinking shows they are closer than you realized.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is valuable information.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During intervention, you need to hear student thinking so you can respond to it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The answer matters, but the thinking matters more.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Intervention Should Build Understanding, Not Just Correct Answers</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the heart of math intervention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal is not to rush students through more problems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal is to help students understand the math deeply enough to use it again.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That means intervention should include:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Explicit instruction</strong></li>



<li><strong>Visual models</strong></li>



<li><strong>Hands-on practice</strong></li>



<li><strong>Student explanations</strong></li>



<li><strong>Progress monitoring</strong></li>



<li><strong>Targeted skill practice</strong></li>



<li><strong>Time to revisit foundational concepts</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It also means we have to be willing to slow down.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know that is not always easy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teachers have so much pressure to move forward. But if students are missing number sense, moving faster will not fix the problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It usually makes the gap bigger.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students build number sense, they are not just learning one math skill.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are building the foundation for so many future skills.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Place value supports operations.<br>Operations support problem solving.<br>Fraction understanding supports decimals.<br>Estimation supports reasonableness.<br>Mental math supports confidence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is all connected.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that is why number sense belongs in math intervention.</p>

They are problem-solving, reading carefully, making connections, using math skills, and explaining their reasoning without even realizing how much work their brains are doing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Are Logic Puzzlers?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Logic puzzlers are fun and challenging brain-teaser activities that encourage students to think deeply, stay organized, and use reasoning to solve a problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I first started using logic puzzlers when I was looking for enrichment activities for my students. I wanted something more meaningful than “extra work,” but I also needed it to be easy to use. Logic puzzlers were the perfect fit because they gave students a challenge while still keeping them engaged.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A logic puzzler kit may include activities like:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Logic Grid Challenges:</strong> Students use deductive reasoning and clues to solve a story-based puzzle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cool Math:</strong> Students solve math equations with different operations as they work down the column.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Complex Mazes:</strong> Students use focus and problem-solving skills to make their way through a maze.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Letter Challenges:</strong> Students use a set of letters to create as many words as possible.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Symbol Sudoku:</strong> Students cut and paste patterned symbols to complete a Sudoku-style grid.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students work through a logic puzzle, they have to use the information they are given and figure out what must be true, what cannot be true, and what still needs to be solved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is such an important math skill.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students are not just guessing. They are thinking through clues, eliminating possibilities, and making logical decisions. They quickly learn that there may be different ways to approach a problem, but their answer still has to make sense based on the information provided.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, in a logic grid challenge, students may be given a short story and several clues. They have to organize the clues, connect the information, and use reasoning to find the solution.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That kind of thinking strengthens the same skills students need when solving multi-step math problems, analyzing patterns, and explaining their answers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Logic Puzzlers Strengthen Following Directions</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s be honest. Following directions is a skill students need constant practice with.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Logic puzzlers are a great way to strengthen that skill because students have to slow down, read carefully, and pay attention to exactly what the activity is asking them to do.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If they skip a direction or rush through the instructions, they may end up with an incorrect answer. That gives students a natural reason to go back, reread, and try again.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, a letter challenge might ask students to use a group of letters to make words, but the words must be at least four letters long. If students miss that part, their answers will not fit the challenge.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is simple, but powerful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Logic puzzlers help students practice reading directions closely in a way that does not feel like another worksheet. They learn that details matter, and that careful reading can completely change the outcome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Logic Puzzlers Promote Problem Solving</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Problem-solving is at the heart of every logic puzzler.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students are not just completing math facts or filling in blanks. They are figuring things out.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Symbol Sudoku, students have to think about placement and patterns as they complete the grid. In Sequence Task Cards, students have to identify a rule and continue the pattern. In Math Mobile Task Cards, students have to determine the value of each emoji so the mobile stays balanced.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each activity asks students to think, test ideas, make adjustments, and keep going.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That perseverance piece is huge.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So often in math, students want to know the exact steps right away. Logic puzzlers help them get more comfortable sitting with a challenge. They learn that it is okay not to know the answer immediately. They learn how to try one approach, rethink it, and keep working.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That kind of confidence carries over into the rest of your math block.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Logic Puzzlers Promote Creativity</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of my favorite things about logic puzzlers is that they allow students to solve problems in different ways.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As teachers, we know that not every student thinks the same way. Logic puzzlers make that so clear.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I especially love using these as partner or team-building activities because you get to hear students talk through their thinking. One student may organize the clues one way, while another student sees a pattern completely differently. Both may be using logical thinking, but their process looks different.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is a beautiful thing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When students explain how they got an answer, we learn so much about how their brains work. We can see if they are making connections, using math vocabulary, reasoning through clues, and thinking creatively.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Logic puzzlers remind students that math is not always about memorizing one procedure. Sometimes math is about exploring, testing, connecting, and explaining.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that is where the real thinking happens.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When most teachers hear “storytelling in math,” they probably think of word problems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But let’s be real. Most word problems are not actually stories.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A student buys oranges. Two cars leave the mall. Someone has a bunch of pencils. There is usually a little setup, a few numbers, and a question mark at the end.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those types of problems still have a place in math instruction, but they are usually stripped down. The story part is barely there.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is where logic puzzlers can add something different.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Story-based math puzzlers bring back a true story element. Students are given a short, high-interest situation with a problem to solve. Then they use the story, clues, and a number grid to make connections and find the solution.</p>

I have 5 ideas for ways that you can challenge students who need “more.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Providing enrichment activities or finding resources for early finishers should typically follow some key guidelines. Don&#8217;t stress about providing enrichment opportunities to those that need it. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:30px"><strong>Here are 5 ways to challenge students who need enrichment:</strong></h2>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color" style="font-size:24px">1. COMPLEXITY</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, find activities that are on the higher end of complexity in reading level, information, and math skills for your students. This could look like reading on the next grade level or assigning some higher-level word problems in math.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color" style="font-size:24px">2. <strong>P</strong>ROCESS</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Second, the process of enrichment should promote choice and flexibility for the student.</p>

Logic Puzzler/ Early Finisher Activities are the answer! <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>WHAT ARE LOGIC PUZZLERS?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, you may be wondering what logic puzzlers are. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Early-Finisher-Kits-318715"><strong>Logic puzzlers</strong></a> were designed when I began searching for <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Early-Finisher-Kits-318715"><strong>enrichment activities</strong> </a>for my students. Each kit typically includes 8 different enrichment activities such as:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Logic Grid Challenges</strong>– Using deductive reasoning, students will use the clues provided to find the solution to the story. Logic Grid Challenges require students to stay organized and see beyond the clues provided.</li>



<li><strong>Cool Math</strong>– Students will solve various math equations with different operations to make their way down the column in under one minute!</li>



<li><strong>Complex Maze</strong>– Can your students find their way thru this complex and fun maze?</li>



<li><strong>Letter Challenge</strong>– Students will be provided a set of letters and asked to create as many 4 letter words as they can think of.</li>



<li><strong>Symbol Sudoku</strong>– Students will cut and paste 9 different patterned symbols to successfully complete the Sudoku grid.</li>



<li><strong>Sequence Task Cards</strong>– 12 complex sequences that students must identify the rule and continue the pattern.</li>



<li><strong>Math Mobile Task Cards</strong>– Students must figure out the value of each emoji to balance out the math mobiles.</li>



<li><strong>Symbol Sums Task Cards</strong>– Students will be provided addition equation to help identify the value of each symbol provided.</li>

They appreciate having hands-on activities to do if they finish early. Finally, they are just plain FUN! That is still what school is about, right? Having fun while learning!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are so MANY different ways to incorporate these into your classroom. <p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>#1 EARLY FINISHER ACTIVITIES</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Using <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Early-Finisher-Kits-318715">logic puzzlers</a> for early finishers is honestly the main reason that they were created. I always needed something for students to do when they finished with the assigned work early. It was difficult to find activities that felt challenging and fun, but did not feel like &#8220;busy work&#8221; for students. Simply pass one out at the beginning of the week or keep on a shelf in your room for students to grab when they are finished. You could assign extra credit for completing these.</p>

These are perfect for emergency sub plans so you don&#8217;t have to try to get together a math lesson at the last minute if you need to be out! Print out some non-holiday ones and stick them in your sub folder! However, I would recommend trying them with your students <em>at least once</em> before having a substitute use them.</p>

In the past, I have assigned a set on a Monday and made it due the following Monday. This gave students the entire week and weekend to complete the set on top of other school work. You could even tie this into Fun Friday. For example, once students earn 10 days of good behavior as a class-they can earn a fun Friday. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">As May rolls around, the school year starts winding down, and that always brings a mix of emotions. You’re tired, your students are tired, and the finish line is close. But before the year wraps up completely, this is one of the best times to pause and look at the growth your students have made in math.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As teachers, we reflect on our teaching all year long. We think about the lessons that worked, the ones that flopped, the groups that needed more support, and the moments where students finally got it. That kind of reflection matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this time of year also gives us another important opportunity. It’s the perfect time to give an <strong><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/tanya-yero-teaching?search=math%20benchmark">end-of-year math diagnostic</a></strong> and get a clear picture of student growth.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spooky season can be a fun time in the classroom, but it can also feel overwhelming for teachers with the extra prep and added craziness! Read on to discover six Halloween activities to use during the month of October that are easy to implement and fun for students! </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Halloween Paperless Math Prompts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celebrating the holidays with your students doesn’t mean every activity has to be over the top. Our <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Paperless-Math-Prompts-551749">Paperless Math Prompts</a> are themed and include ready to display math questions. These prompts promote problem solving and number sense!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Halloween Logic Puzzlers</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students love these things. They really love the challenge of them and I love them because they promote deductive reasoning; forcing students to read between the lines. I use <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Early-Finisher-Kits-318715">logic puzzlers</a> during the month of October and I even keep some in my emergency sub folder for those “Oh no, I need to call out!” days. Our logic puzzlers can be found in our early finisher kits and you can choose between print logic puzzlers or digital ones! </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Halloween Digital Escape Rooms</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always try to do one WOW Halloween activity with my students, usually on Halloween or the Friday before. This is my “one big moment” to pack my Halloween punch! Students love escape rooms. They love the mystery and thrill! They especially love BREAKING OUT!  <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/DIGITAL-CLASSROOM-ESCAPES-333812">DIGITAL escape rooms</a> are a personal favorite of mine because I don’t need to prep locks, boxes, folders, and a million copies. Our Digital Halloween Escape Rooms have been used by thousands of students and are a fan favorite. Our pumpkin themed escape room does not mention Halloween or any corresponding characters for schools that do not participate in spooky season.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Differentiated Math Tasks</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need to maintain the same level of instruction during these holiday months. I use <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Level-On-Math-Tasks-544112">differentiated math activities</a> that are Halloween themed to review curriculum that I introduced in the months leading up to October 31st. These math projects include a high interest passage with 3 pages of differentiated math questions. I love that I’m providing practice that is specific to a child’s needs and they enjoy the themed presentation!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Print Halloween Escape Rooms</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If digital escape rooms aren’t your thing, print escape rooms are just as fun! Our <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/Print-Escape-Challenges-549082">Case File Math Challenges</a> are logic puzzles and mysteries rolled into one fun, collaborative Math game. Students will begin with a short themed introductory passage which will outline the mystery or problem that needs to be solved. Next, students will complete fun math problem solving challenges to receive clues to the case file. The clues from correctly solving the math challenges will help students solve the greater mystery or problem introduced in the passage. Our print Halloween escape room is LOW prep too! Each group needs 5 pages to complete this challenge with NO cutting or gluing!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Halloween Scavenger Hunt</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I challenge you to find me a child that doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt. Teachers love scavenger hunts because it gets students up and moving. Those wiggly students really shine in such activities. This <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Activities-for-Halloween-Scavenger-Hunt-Game-Team-Building-ZERO-PREP-6046445">Halloween themed scavenger hunt</a> has ready to display prompts for objects that are easily found in the classroom (and for those virtual teachers and homeschool moms there is an “at home” version too!)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In science class the definition of kinetic energy is energy that is in motion. In social studies the Revolutionary War happened between 1775-1783. These are all answers that only have one correct response. But math is different. It is fluid and open to interpretation whether in the answer or the reasoning one took to arrive at that answer. And for this fact I love using open ended math tasks in my classroom.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-open-ended-math-tasks">What are open ended math tasks?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Open ended math tasks are problems with more than one answer. They encourage higher order thinking and justifying mathematical reasoning. They are more than “Solve: 13 x 4.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have always encouraged creativity amongst my students by modeling different ways to approach a problem and open ended tasks support all of this and more. Here are 3 reasons why you should be using open ended math tasks in your classroom.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-open-ended-tasks-promote-math-discussion">Open ended tasks promote math discussion. </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I use Which One Doesn’t Belong math prompts to start the day. Students are encouraged to share their responses and EXPLAIN why they chose the answer they did. Students will debate with one another to defend their answer. You’ll hear logical reasoning being used and perhaps some misconceptions that you can address.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-open-ended-math-tasks-will-build-student-confidence">Open ended math tasks will build student confidence. </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I introduce WODB to my students I tell them there are NO wrong answers! They love the idea of NOT being told “no” or “incorrect” and they start to take greater risks. Watch out for over-the-top abstract responses or ideas that are very basic and redirect students back to reasoning that is math based and appropriate for their grade level. Open ended tasks celebrate the variety of ability in your classroom. In the example below the two student responses are both correct and illustrates different levels of understanding.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-open-ended-prompts-build-engagement">Open ended prompts build engagement </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As teachers we’re always looking for ways to hook our students and increase interest. These types of prompts will engage students! Keep your tasks and questions short and vague and watch the ideas fly! Your students&#8217; <a href="https://www.tanyayeroteaching.com/how-to-use-math-resources-to-promote-discovery-and-the-why-for-deeper-thinking/">problem solving skills</a> will also improve. Ask questions that cover different topics in different presentations such as manipulatives, models, number lines, and more!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most frequently asked questions I receive from teachers is “How do I get my students to put forth effort when presented with word problems?” More often than not, students pull out numbers from word problems and join them with whatever operation they have recently been taught and try to pass that answer off as work. This short-cut way of solving comes from a place of fear. They don’t know what they don’t know. Your students need to be taught how to see and approach word problems. It’s our job to prepare them with a toolkit of strategies and ways of thinking, so they can see themselves as capable individuals when solving word problems.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I teach my students how to decode word problems. I provide them strategies to use, model my thinking and create a blueprint for them.</strong> <strong>Using such strategies as CUBES or other acronyms is TOTALLY OKAY, but I suggest implementing other problem solving strategies as well. </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It takes 8 days but it’s well worth it. Here is the schedule I follow for walking my students through a program that teaches them how to problem solve to answer math questions. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-day-1-introduction">Day 1 – Introduction</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first day is about the introduction to the program. Start by unpacking what a word problem is with your students. There are no wrong answers- you’re trying to get an idea of how your students see math questions that are not procedural based. You’ll probably find that your students have negative feelings towards word problems. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Encourage them by explaining that we will gain insight and strategies that will make us better problem solvers and therefore more comfortable with word problems. We also cover the power of mental visualization. We practice painting mental pictures of the events in the story. This helps students realize that word problems require comprehension and not just math skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-days-2-4-teaching-reading-strategies-for-solving-word-problems">Days 2-4 – Teaching reading strategies for solving word problems</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Days 5-6 swings away from the reading comprehension of word problems back to the problem solving. This is more than “circle the keywords” or “box the numbers out.” These are a set of strategies that support numerical reasoning and accuracy. These strategies help students establish, model, and organize the numerical information in the word problem. Here are the math strategies we cover:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-days-7-8-practice">Days 7-8 – Practice</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where I start to move away from instruction and into practice. The practice comes in two forms. First, I want my students to decode questions in groups or pairs. I’m looking to hear what we have learned over the last six days in the form of math discussion. I’m also looking to see who is still struggling and may need additional support. This is also a great time to use <a href="https://www.tanyayeroteaching.com/why-multi-step-word-problems-are-so-important/">multi-step word problems</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the last day I have my students work on eight questions independently. This is my formative assessment of what they have learned. I’m not trying to assess new math skills, so I select questions students can use previously taught skills to solve. Giving your students a toolkit to revisit time and time again will better serve their ability to problem solve. Not only are you providing them with a set of strategies to help them in times of need, you’re also providing them with the confidence they often lack to decode and effectively solve word problems. Teach your students not to be calculators, but instead problem solvers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The back to school season is full of excitement, new school supplies and the promise of a fun and inviting year. As teachers, building the proper classroom community is the focal point of the first week of school. As we prepare for a potential year of distance learning or a hybrid model, educators are asking the same question over and over again&#8211;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em><strong>“How do we build a classroom community over a computer screen?”</strong></em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Zoom breakout rooms make this possible and more! </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a <a href="https://www.tanyayeroteaching.com/community-building-ideas-for-distance-learning/">recent blog</a> post I talked about 5 activities for creating a classroom community. One of the activities I mentioned were our <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tanya-Yero-Teaching/Category/DIGITAL-CLASSROOM-ESCAPES-333812">Digital Classroom Escapes</a>. Students are yearning to interact with one another. Start building community in your classroom with these fun, collaborative games. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is a Digital Classroom Escape?</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A digital classroom escape is an interactive activity in which teams of students use clues to solve challenges. In addition, they are perfect for distance learning because they don’t require any equipment like traditional escape rooms. Also, your students can work together to problem solve via Zoom breakout rooms! </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How To Present a Digital Escape Remotely</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For distance learning, there are a few ways to have your students complete an escape. First, you can complete an escape in a whole group setting via whatever platform you use to video chat with your students. I would recommend completing an escape/introducing this activity in this setup. You want to go over the layout and how an escape works with your students to maximize success for future use. Once you have introduced a digital escape to your students there are two ways that they can complete them: 1.) Students can complete the task independently or 2.) They can complete an escape with a group of students via Zoom breakout rooms!</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Zoom Breakout Rooms</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Zoom breakout rooms allow you to split a zoom meeting into smaller sessions. As the teacher you can toggle back and forth from room to room and check in with your groups as they are working on an escape! You can pre-assign students to breakout rooms prior to the initial meeting so you can do your thing with grouping students using your observations and data.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for Conducting An Escape Using Zoom Breakout Rooms</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>If you have the ability to email your students the link before you meet, this will help save time! Sometimes clicking links from the chat in Zoom isn’t the most efficient.</li><li>When you are creating your groups try to put one tech savvy student in each breakout room. Students will have to share their screen with other participants within the group.&nbsp;</li><li>Keep your groups small. I recommend groups of 3-4. You’ll be bouncing from room to room and you want to ensure that you can provide support if students get stuck.&nbsp;</li><li>As with any resource you provide to your students, make sure to read the directions carefully. Our Digital Classroom Escapes provide several pages of tips, clues/hints, and important information so the activity is beneficial to your class.</li></ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No matter where you are teaching your students just want to see your smiling face and the faces of their peers. With Zoom breakout rooms they can have that and more! </p>

Check out these 5 community building ideas for distance learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">All About Me Presentations</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To begin your school year, have your students create presentations about themselves and present to the class via Zoom or Google Meet. If you prefer to do this asynchronously, your students can share to Google Classroom, Seesaw, or another preferred distance learning platform. Before you have your students create a presentation, make one to share all about you!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make it simple with these <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-About-Me-Digital-Project-BACK-TO-SCHOOL-ACTIVITY-Digital-Resource-3203523">all about me presentation templates</a>. Complete with planning sheets and technology directions, students can create their presentations on PicCollage, DoodleBuddy, or Google Slides.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Escapes</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another of the community building ideas for distance learning is a digital escape. Students are yearning to interact with one another. Digital escapes make that possible! Start building community in your classroom with these fun, collaborative games.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What is a digital escape? A digital classroom escape is an interactive activity in which teams of students use clues to solve challenges. In addition, they are perfect for distance learning because they don&#8217;t require any equipment like traditional escape rooms. Also, your students can work together to problem solve via your virtual learning platform.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, provide the students with a link to the Digital Escape Room, and they&#8217;ll enter the codes (answers) on the Google Form provided. Have the students participate via Google Classroom, or if you&#8217;re able to have adults supervise or your district allows students to Zoom on their own, try Zoom&#8217;s Breakout Rooms.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Math Scavenger Hunt</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oh, how I love when classroom community building ideas meet Math! This <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/mathdeals-Digital-Math-Scavenger-Hunt-Teambuilding-Back-to-School-5752936">digital math scavenger hunt</a> (on Google Slides or PowerPoint) lets your students find objects in their home that show that they know math standards. For example, one slide says &#8220;The next item you&#8217;ll need to wrangle is something that simply forms a right angle.&#8221; Not only do the slides have cute little rhymes, they get your learners moving and thinking.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Logic Puzzlers</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two heads (or more) are better than one! That&#8217;s why I love using logic puzzlers in groups. This <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREE-Logic-Puzzler-Early-Finishers-Back-To-School-DISTANCE-LEARNING-GOOGLE-3953657#show-price-update">free first day fiasco logic puzzler</a> is one of my favorites to use with small groups. Your students will figure out &#8220;Emily&#8217;s&#8221; class schedule based on clues using deductive reasoning.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Virtual Meetings</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s fair to say that the best times in distance learning for many students were the live, synchronous meetings.&nbsp; Make an effort to connect with your students daily (or at least a couple times per week if you&#8217;re in a self-contained content area). Not only are they connecting with you, they&#8217;re getting to interact with their peers. They miss each other, and even if it&#8217;s virtual, they need this community building and face-to-face time.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some ideas for Zoom or Google Meets that don&#8217;t necessarily involve teaching content.</p>

When you&#8217;re back in the classroom, you&#8217;ll already have a strong foundation when it&#8217;s time for hugs and high fives once again!&nbsp;</p>
